The National Road Racing Series committee presented several proposals to the WKA trustees at their April 5th meeting. These included two new versions of the RLV SSX can mufflers, use of 2002 and earlier bodywork only in CIK 125 Sprint and Spec 125 Sprint classes, and four wheel or dual brakes on most road racing classes beginning in 2004. The trustees approved all of the committee's proposals.

The two new RLV SSX mufflers were developed as a result of racer requests and will be a welcome addition for competitors in the Piston Port Can classes. The mufflers' outlet holes are located between 9:00 and 12:00 o'clock on the left hand version (RLV #7541) and 12:00 o'clock and 3:00 o'clock on the right hand version (RLV # 7543). These mufflers give the competitors more options as to where they want to direct the exhaust gas flow, while maintaining the same level of performance as older SSX mufflers. The new versions are approved for use beginning May 1, 2003.

The NRRS committee also recommended to the trustees that the bodywork in the CIK 125 Sprint and Spec 125 Sprint classes be limited to 2002 and earlier CIK style noses, side pods and fairings during the 2003 road racing season. When polled at the Kershaw event, the competitors were unanimous in their desire to stay with 2002 bodywork this season. The NRRS committee will review the bodywork specs for these classes and make recommendations for next season's rules, which will be published in the 2004 Tech Manual.

The last proposal approved by the trustees was to require the use of dual brake systems on all karts except those competing in the Briggs sprint classes. Karts with engines under 110ccs and those in the Spec 125 Sprint class must have either dual system four wheel or dual rear wheel brakes. Karts with over 110ccs must have dual system four-wheel brakes. A dual system must have two separate master cylinders and hydraulic systems. This is to provide redundant braking systems to improve safety. To give competitors time to upgrade their equipment, this rule will be effective at the beginning of the 2004 season.
